2026 Fall Field Season Update
After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision not to operate the MSBO 2026 fall field season.
Despite the generosity of many supporters, we were not able to secure the funding necessary to responsibly operate this year’s field season. A successful migration monitoring season requires several months of planning and preparation, including permits, equipment, hiring staff, volunteer coordination, fundraising, and staff time. Without the necessary financial resources in place, we felt it was important to make this difficult decision rather than begin a season we could not fully support.
Our commitment to MSBO and its long history of migration monitoring remains as strong as ever. We will spend the coming year working to secure the resources needed to make the 2027 fall field season possible. Donations already made to support the fall field season will help us work toward that goal.
We are deeply grateful to everyone who has supported MSBO through donations, volunteering, and encouragement over the years.

Support Fall 2027 Bird Banding at Burke Lake
Burke Lake Banding Station has been monitoring bird migration since 2012, contributing long-term data while connecting visitors, volunteers, students, and bird enthusiasts with migration research in action.
MSBO is working with Mackinac Straits Raptor Watch to continue fall bird banding operations at Burke Lake Banding Station in 2027 and beyond. Continued operation depends on raising enough support to fund a full field crew.
To support Fall 2027 banding operations, please donate through Mackinac Straits Raptor Watch and select “MSBO” from the donation dropdown menu.
All funds designated for MSBO will go directly toward supporting bird banding operations and migration monitoring at Burke Lake Banding Station.
